Over 200 teachers gathered together at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall for a free showing of Bored Teachers, a touring comedy show made of real teachers.

On October 13th, the Sarasota Performing Arts Foundation and Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation celebrated 200 regional teachers with a free live performance by Bored Teachers, one of the biggest entertainment platforms for teachers in the world.

In alignment with the Sarasota Performing Arts Foundation’s mission to advance education and enrich communities by inspiring minds through the power of the arts, the free performance featured a number of teacher-comedians from around the world, providing an opportunity for hardworking teaching professionals to relax.

After the performance, the teachers were honored during a post-show reception. The reception allowed teachers to mingle and meet performers from the show.

“The hard work and dedication of our teachers does not go unnoticed. We are thankful to be able to partner with the Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation to provide this opportunity for our area teachers as a way to recognize the remarkable work and passion they show each and every day,” said Kelli Maldonaldo, Executive Director of Mission and Impact at the Sarasota Performing Arts Foundation.

During the reception, the annual Appleton Awards were announced. The Appleton Awards are a program that enables our community to recognize the outstanding teachers in Sarasota County. Founded with an endowment from Louise Appleton, the awards seek to recognize the achievements and potential of educators using Arts Integration and Education in their classrooms or community and is open to PreK-12 Educators in Sarasota, Manatee, Desoto or Charlotte County. Winners receive a scholarship to attend an approved National Conference in Arts Integration (Experienced Category) or a local or virtual conference (Emerging).

“It was our pleasure to announce this year’s application for the Appleton Teacher Scholarship Awards at this year’s appreciation event. We are thankful to the Charles and Margery Barancik Foundation, Mattison’s by the Bay, and Sue Ellen’s Flowers for joining us in recognizing our region's amazing teachers.” - Kelli Maldonaldo

The Appleton Awards deadline is Sunday, December 17th. More information can be found at www.performingartsfoundation.org/appleton
